E-Recycling Event 04/21: Help Save The Earth & You Can Win A New Tablet

chicago computer club e-recycling event april 21stFor Immediate Release April 12, 2012: Help Save The Earth & You Can Win A New Tablet

Chicago Computer Club is sponsoring an e-waste recycling event on Saturday, April 21st from 10 am to 2 pm. In partnership with 4th Ward Alderman William Burns’ office, the retail computer store chain will be accepting old computers, monitors, and printers at the 4th Ward Facilities Building at 4352 South Cottage Grove Avenue. The event is located in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. Residents who bring in old computers or peripherals for recycling will receive coupons from local south Chicago businesses as well as enter into a raffle, with the winner receiving a new premium Android Tablet.

Additionally, all computers brought in are guaranteed to be clean wiped by Chicago Computer Club’s recycling partner, Chicago Surplus Computer, one of the city’s largest e-recyclers. This will ensure that any personal information on the computer will be deleted.

“E-waste is a growing problem,” says Andre McDearmon, Chicago Computer Club’s Recycling Manager and Lead Technician. “You can’t throw computers and other electronics in a landfill without causing detrimental environmental impact. Not to mention you can now be fined by the City of Chicago if you put e-waste items, like used computers, in with the regular trash.”

Mcdearmon says that the event is part of Chicago Computer Club’s ongoing commitment to minimizing the environmental impact of computers. “As one of Chicago’s largest computer repair shops, we can attest to the growing problem of e-waste, because our stores are often involved in the end of life of computers. We see first hand how it adds up quickly, the sheer volume of computers that are no longer functional.”

E-waste recycling is the missing piece of the puzzle to reducing the amount of old computers and accessories that end up in land fills, says Mcdearmon. “People don’t have access, or just don’t know where to recycle their used computers and related hardware. Plus people tend to have a lot of information stored on their old computers, and they’re scared it might fall into the wrong hands. Our recycler, Chicago Computer Surplus, is one of the best in the city and makes sure that all computer hard drives are wiped clean before being repurposed.”

Mcdearmon adds that most recycled computers do get repurposed. It is estimated that upwards of 85% of each recycled computer can be reused productively in other computer and network applications.

“Recycling your computer has a double benefit,” he says, “It reduces toxic waste in our landfills, and also prevents future waste by repurposing parts to functioning computer systems.”

In addition to E-recycling, residents will also be able to shred documents, credit cards, and other paper items that they don’t wish to put in the usual trash recycling bin. That service will be provided by Midway Movers.

From www.usb.org:

As technology innovation marches forward, new kinds of devices, media formats, and large inexpensive storage are converging. They require significantly more bus bandwidth to maintain the interactive experience users have come to expect. In addition, user applications demand a higher performance connection between the PC and these increasingly sophisticated peripherals. USB 3.0 addresses this need by adding an even higher transfer rate to match these new usage and devices.

USB continues to be the answer to connectivity for PC, Consumer Electronics, and Mobile architectures. It is a fast, bidirectional, low-cost, dynamically attachable interface that is consistent with the requirements of the PC platforms of today and tomorrow.

SuperSpeed USB brings significant performance enhancements to the ubiquitous USB standard, while remaining compatible with the billions of USB enabled devices currently deployed in the market. SuperSpeed USB will deliver 10x the data transfer rate of Hi-Speed USB, as well as improved power efficiency.

  • SuperSpeed USB has a 5 Gbps signaling rate offering 10x performance increase over Hi-Speed USB.
  • SuperSpeed USB is a Sync-N-Go technology that minimizes user wait-time.
  • SuperSpeed USB will provide Optimized Power Efficiency. No device polling and lower active and idle power requirements.
  • SuperSpeed USB is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. Devices interoperate with USB 2.0 platforms. Hosts support USB 2.0 legacy devices.
